Mormon Insights Articles The following three articles were written by undergraduate college students. The purpose of these articles are to highlight an article related to the LDS Church in a way that appeal to young adults. The articles needed to be formatted to meet the requirements for publication on the Mormon Insights website (Mormon Insights is an online publication that discusses LDS topics). Since the audience of the publication is young adults worldwide, the tone of the articles were meant to be professional, conversational, informative, engaging, and inclusive. The articles were supposed to be approximately 500 words. Depending on the article, I either did a substantive edit of the articles or copyedited the articles according to The Chicago Manual of Style: 16th Edition and the Mormon Insights's unique style guide. My edits focus specifically on clarifying the author's meaning and making sure the style matches the standards for Mormon Insights. I used Track Changes on Microsoft Word to document my edits.
Assignment—"Introspections on Dejection" This sample is a PDF of edits that I made on a fellow student's paper for my job with the Writing Fellows. The student's assignment was to write a two-page analysis of a Romantic-era poem. The audience of this paper is literary-minded students and graduates who appreciate British Romantic poetry. Because this paper was a first draft, I was asked to do a substantive edit of the assignment. I focused on the flow of the paper and whether or not the argument within the paper reflected the thesis statement. Since I was not copyediting the paper, I ignored most spelling and composition errors. I used Track Changes in Microsoft Word to document my changes.
Leading Edge Magazine Short Story—"The Earth Shall Rest" This short story was published in Leading Edge Magazine, a BYU-sponsored, semi-professional magazine that publishes fantasy and science-fiction short stories. The audience of the magazine is adults who enjoy reading or writing fantasy and science-fiction short stories. The stories can be up to 15,000 words, and should conform to the BYU Honor Code. As one of the aquisition editors, I was in charge of copyediting this story so it could be approved for publication in Issue 66 3/4 of Leading Edge magazine. I was asked to be careful not to overedit the story, because the head editors wanted to make sure the voice of the author was still apparent. Therefore, I limited my editing to basic punctuation fixes and a few short clarificating edits so the story would be clearer, but the author's voice would still be maintained. I used Track Changes in Microsoft Word to document my changes.
